Paddle Club, Raivavae (Austral Islands)
1870.371.1
Despite its name, this object was never intended to be used as a paddle. Rather, this intricately carved wooden club is similar to those made for trade with Europeans in the mid-to-late 19th century, including the missionary who likely acquired this object. Note the figures carved at the base of the handle, and the paneling in the design.
