Shark-Toothed Sword (te toanea), Republic of Kiribati
1870.376.31
This is one of several shark-toothed weapons in Wesleyan’s collections, acquired from the Missionary Lyceum in 1870. Though ominous-looking, warriors who used shark-toothed weapons were well-protected by suits of armor made of coir, the tough outer fibers of coconut husks.
