Institute of American Indian Studies Field Trip (Fall 2023)

Fall 2023

Report by Melanie Cham (’24)

Students in the course ARCP310 Archaeological Theory in Action: Research Design and Analytical Frameworks took a field trip to the Institute for American Indian Studies last week. Museum staff gave us a behind the scenes look at the archaeological and ethnographic collections housed at IAIS, and we went on a tour of the museum and native Healing Plants Garden. A highlight of the tour was our walk through a reconstructed Algonkian village. Before our visit, we read about etuaptmumk, or two-eyed seeing, which is a theoretical approach developed by Indigenous scholars that combines Indigenous and Western ways of knowing for collaborative research. Check out the IAIS website here.
