Elk

THIS PAGE IS STILL A WORK IN PROGRESS

This Cervus canadensis skeleton (KB18-03) comes from an mature/older female Elk. The specimen was purchased in 2018 from a collector who found the carcass in the mountains of Northeastern New Mexico. The bones were boiled in order to remove residue and pests. This skeleton is almost complete, notably lacking the caudal region (tail vertebrae) and a few cervical and lumbar-thoracic vertebrae – likely due to scavenging from predators. There is one pathology on the left forelimb phalanges with some unusual bone growth.
