Ceramic Tea Cup, Middletown, CT

WA 250.14

During the 18th century, trade with China was changing the aesthetic tastes of wealthy Europeans and Euro-Americans. The popularity of chinoiserie, which refers to Western-made ceramics that mimic or replicate Asian motifs and designs, is reflected in archaeological assemblages from this time period. Standard chinoiserie design elements are visible on this teacup, including the zigzag fence, the boat on the water, and pagoda-style architecture.
