Dr. Peter H. Buck (Te Rangi Hīroa), director of Honolulu’s Bishop Museum for many years, was a doctor, military leader, and anthropologist of Māori (New Zealand) descent. In 1939, he visited Wesleyan’s Oceanic collections, and identified several objects, including this carved paddle club. He identified the red spiral superimposed on the carving as being a Māori design.
